This much-loved European city break destination is bringing in an alcohol ban
Briefly

Porto has introduced a ban on alcohol sales from supermarkets and other shops in its downtown area during nighttime hours. This initiative, effective from June 25, is aimed at addressing social disturbances linked to increased street drinking. The restrictions apply to the Containment Zone, allowing only licensed venues to sell alcohol overnight. Mayor Rui de Carvalho de Araújo Moreira pointed out that previous fines were ineffective in curbing violations, prompting tighter regulations to protect public safety as visitor numbers rise and nightlife expands.
"What we noticed is that the successive application of fines did not dissuade economic agents from continuing to violate the rules, because paying the fine was worth it."
"What justifies this is our conviction that this phenomenon in several parts of the city is causing harm and having an impact on public safety and order."
