The 11-story tower at 1550 Bryant St. is anchored in the history of San Francisco's punk scene, where the original Hamm's beer headquarters transformed into a vibrant living and practice space for over 100 punk rockers in the 1970s. This building, known as the Vats, allowed for self-governance among its tenants, reflecting a unique sense of anarchy. Key bands like MDC thrived in this environment, leaving a lasting legacy honored through placards and graffiti. Today, the tower's lobby captures this dynamic history alongside modern office amenities.
"We were throwing around the word anarchy a lot. Anarchy was just trying to take care of yourself and try to govern yourself and look out for yourself. Self-management, that type of anarchy," said Dave Dictor, vocalist of the band MDC.
"It was kind of the definition of anarchy that we love," said Mia d'Bruzzi of the band Frightwhig, who gigged at popular venues of the era, including Mabuhay Gardens and Tool & Die.
