"Lingas' scholarship in Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox liturgical music has brought long silenced works to performance and publication. Cappella Romana's informed performances of the ancient works have introduced a unique style and sound to a wide audience. And many contemporary composers writing in the Eastern Orthodox tradition have had their works premiered and recorded by Cappella Romana."
"Cappella Romana is offering their final concerts of their 2025-26 season on March 6 and 7. But these concerts carry much more significance in the life of this Portland choir: They mark the conclusion of CR's founder Alexander Lingas 35-years as Music Director."
"The change will allow him to devote more time to his scholarship and theological education work at the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge (UK) and the Institute of Sacred Arts at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York."
Cappella Romana, a Portland-based internationally renowned choir, is marking a significant transition in its leadership. Founder Alexander Lingas is concluding his 35-year tenure as Music Director following final concerts on March 6 and 7. Lingas will assume the role of Music Director Emeritus, allowing him to dedicate more time to scholarly work and theological education at institutions in Cambridge and Yonkers. His contributions to sacred music include extensive scholarship in Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox liturgical music, bringing previously unperformed works to audiences and supporting contemporary composers in the Orthodox tradition. John Michael Boyer, the Associate Music Director since 2017, will serve as Interim Director during the international search for Lingas' permanent successor.
