The recent 4K remaster of Pink Floyd's iconic concert film, originally shot in 1971 at Pompeii, reflects on the band's evolution and cultural significance. Amid their transition from psychedelic rock to more profound themes, the film highlights not just the music but the contrasting imagery of ancient ruins and modern decay, particularly resonating in downtown San Jose. The experience in the IMAX theater emphasizes the timelessness of the performance while drawing parallels between the historical devastation of Pompeii and the urban blight surrounding Tech Interactive.
The film eventually became one of the most legendary concert films of all time, with numerous re-releases emerging over the next 50 years.
Rewatching that footage in that theater, there was no way for me to separate the ruins of Pompeii from the ruins currently surrounding the Tech Interactive itself.
