The Parks and Recreation Board recently recommended a vendor, Legacy Hospitality and Entertainment Group, for Zilker Café's operation, which has been vacant for years. Concerns arose regarding the potential profitability, as previous plans for selling alcohol were rejected by the community. Board member Villalobos emphasized doubts about affordability given potential menu prices. Denisha Cox defended the vendor's healthy menu proposal, while the board noted a lack of local interest in the bidding process, as the prohibition on alcohol deterred responses from local vendors.
"I would be shocked if, whoever the vendor is, is going to be selling anything below $10 or $12 per item. And that's not affordable," Board Member Pedro Villalobos said.
"If we approve this vendor, which I'm more than happy to do, are we setting ourselves up for failure - to be having the same conversation... one or two years down the line?"
Denisha Cox, contract manager, mentioned that the vendor's proposed menu options met the "healthy and affordable" requirements, suggesting it's more than just food sales.
Two local vendors cited the prohibition of alcohol as a primary reason for not responding to the city’s request for proposals.
