Monterey's most famous food festival permanently canceled after 65 years
Briefly

The iconic Monterey Artichoke Festival, which celebrated its 65th anniversary, has been officially canceled and will no longer take place in 2025 or beyond. Organizers cited significant financial strains stemming from rising event production costs, insurance premiums, and permitting requirements as the primary reasons for this decision. Originally celebrated in Castroville, the festival gained recognition for honoring California's artichoke production. Notably, the festival has become a cherished local tradition since 1959, offering food booths, live music, and wine tasting, but ultimately faced insurmountable financial challenges, paralleling the recent cancellations of other similar events.
Ending the festival is one of the most difficult decisions we've ever had to make. But the financial realities we now face are insurmountable.
The growing financial strain caused by increasing event production costs, insurance premiums, permitting requirements, and operational challenges made it no longer feasible to continue.
For 65 years, the Artichoke Festival celebrated the delicious thistle with food booths, live music, and wine tasting.
California produces all of the artichokes commercially grown in the United States, the vast majority of which are grown in Monterey County.
