A Mendocino County sheriff's deputy is under investigation for allegedly driving under the influence and committing a hit-and-run after leaving a bar in his patrol car. The deputy was found to have failed to report damage to the vehicle, prompting a review of dashcam footage, which showed him ramming into a guardrail. The investigation has been handed over to the California Highway Patrol due to departmental policy against self-investigation. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave and his peace officer status has been suspended.
It's probably not the best idea for a sheriff's deputy to drive to a bar in their patrol car, get intoxicated, and then drive with the dashcam recording.
The investigation was referred to the California Highway Patrol, as the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office is not allowed to investigate their own.
