Morteza Amiri, a former Antioch police officer, received the longest prison sentence in the ongoing PD scandals—seven years. Found guilty of wire fraud and K9-related charges, he improperly used his police dog during a 2019 incident and falsified records to secure financial gains like pay raises. His actions have been condemned for their brutality and for betraying public trust, with U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian emphasizing the gravity of crimes committed by a police officer. Amiri's sentencing reflects ongoing accountability for misconduct within the Antioch Police Department.
Amiri misused his police dog to inflict unnecessary and excessive force against a victim and cheated his way into a pay raise, US Attorney Craig Missakian said.
Amiri became notorious over allegations of vicious and unnecessary K9 dog attacks, falsifying police records detailing those attacks, and getting raises based on coursework and a degree.
These crimes are appalling in themselves, but even more so that they were committed by a police officer.
With this sentence, Amiri is now being held to account for his multiple betrayals of the public trust.
