Filoli, a historic estate in Woodside, is reorienting its narrative from traditional architecture towards an appreciation of the natural ecosystems that span its grounds. This transformation is embodied in the recent debut of six giant trolls crafted by artist Thomas Dambo, which encourage environmental stewardship amidst growing threats to public lands. The trolls, made from recycled materials, symbolize Filoli's commitment to highlighting both land and history, seeking to create an inviting atmosphere rather than the often intimidating tone of historic houses.
Since 2014, he's erected his fairytale mascots—each made from reused and repurposed materials—in parks and open spaces around the world, from Copenhagen to Miami to China.
