Birds of a Feather
Briefly

The Güero Bird Club emerged during the pandemic as a unique blend of culinary passion and birdwatching. It was initiated by employees of the renowned Kerns torta shop, who shared their birdwatching interests while working in a mostly-empty restaurant. The club ensures accessibility by offering free gatherings and binocular loans, fostering a warm and inclusive community spirit. With a creative online presence and engaging events, the club has grown in popularity, drawing participants to explore nature while creating lasting friendships, showcasing the charm of blending food with avian appreciation.
The scrappy operation first hatched early on in the pandemic—an obviously dismal time for the restaurant industry. While they hung out in the kitchen of a deserted Güero, which was open for takeout only, kitchen manager Audrey Tawdry and employee Greg Smith would pass time by swapping their latest birdwatching updates.
From the start, the organizers ensured that Bird Club was accessible and approachable by making all gatherings free and lending out extra binoculars.
In keeping with their hospitality background, the leaders of Bird Club always strive for a welcoming atmosphere, serving hot coffee and, occasionally, snacks.
Sanchez recalls that they came up with a treat that they would serve during outdoor meet-ups, allowing members to enjoy both nature and community.
