"The Chanticleer we know so well is known to offer the unknown repertoire by the unknown composer, in this case Majel Connery. Wait, unknown? Is this the Majel Connery who is a sought-after vocal soloist; or perhaps the Connery who tours with art-rock band Sky Creature? Or is this the musicologist and 'Music of Their Own' podcast host who champions the works of women composers? She's all that!"
"But Chanticleer wants you to know Connery the composer, using the movements of her song cycle 'The Rivers Are Our Brothers' as support posts for their second half. Listen here to a Chanticleer rehearsal snippet of Connery's work. Takes your breath away."
Majel Connery, a composer, vocalist, and podcaster based in Albuquerque, performed The Rivers are our Brothers at ChatterPDX on February 22 with cellist Felix Fan, violinist Shintaro Taneda, and clarinetist James Shields. Connery has previously performed with ChatterPDX's sister organization ChatterABQ and recently completed a residency as part of the Trotter Visiting Professorship at the University of Oregon. She presented the same song cycle at Reed College in October 2024 through Third Angle. Chanticleer also performed The Rivers are our Brothers in Portland, highlighting Connery's multifaceted career as a sought-after vocal soloist, art-rock musician, musicologist, and podcast host championing women composers. Following her ChatterPDX performance, Connery presented Elderflora at the Mission Theater in collaboration with the World Forestry Center, a song cycle exploring the life cycle of trees.
