"Curiosity Led the Way. Daria Loi was born in Italy and has never been much inclined to take things at face value. From an early age she liked to poke and probe and especially examine the contents of her grandmother's shop in a small village in Sardinia, which contained everything the few inhabitants might need over the course of the year, which her grandmother gave her free rein to do."
"Originally concentrating on collaborative design, she refocused her doctoral investigations into participatory design, a subtle but significant difference. Then it dawned on her that the typical typewritten thesis format would not do justice to her topic. She couldn't genuinely convey what she had discovered in a static book. She needed an artifact to capture the complexity of the multisensorial processes that she was advocating."
Imperfecta opened in February on Portland's North Park Blocks as a hybrid space combining gallery, community center, and installation venue. The 2,800 square foot space features original artwork, art books, prints, and interactive elements like a yellow couch and accessible cabinets. Owner Daria Loi, born in Italy, developed her vision through a unique career path spanning architecture in Milan, industrial design teaching in Australia, and doctoral research in participatory design. Her thesis challenged traditional academic formats by creating a multisensory artifact instead of a conventional written document, establishing her philosophy of interactive, exploratory engagement that now defines Imperfecta's approach.
