Art in the Pearl is a volunteer-run fine arts and crafts festival held over Labor Day weekend in Portland's Pearl District. The 29th annual event features about 140 juried artists from the United States and Canada exhibiting and selling handmade works including painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry, ceramics, woodworks and fibers. The festival is free to attend and offers food, craft demonstrations and hands-on activities. Funding comes from artist application and booth fees, sponsorships and an Oregon Arts Commission grant; organizers emphasize low costs, community focus and gratitude toward sponsors and supporters.
We're realizing we're pretty fragile," Meyer added. "We're lucky because we've never relied on federal funds. We have an Oregon Arts Commission grant, and the festival is supported by application fees and artists paying to have a booth. "It's a very noncommercial-looking festival. But, we're thanking all sponsors, and keeping the focus on the arts. We keep our costs down; I run sponsorships and try to make it a community event.
This is the first year that we're really asking people to support the arts,
