"This project is the work of DE-ICE:PDX, and the message is all about humanizing the plight of immigrants and the impacts of ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. This group believes that we all have a personal stake in protecting our larger family: We are all one."
"PIRC recommends that people call their number if a friend or family member has been detained, giving the person's name and identifying information. The nonprofit provides rapid response, community education, advocacy and collaboration."
"I am in the journalism stream, not the activism stream. Yes, I'm aware of the social consequences of the project. But I do not describe myself as an activist."
DE-ICE:PDX launched a poster campaign across the Portland area on February 15, displaying black-and-white photographs by professional photojournalists with messages emphasizing family unity and immigrant rights. The posters, ranging from 8.5x11 inches to 30x36 inches, were strategically placed at high-visibility locations including the courthouse, Federal Building, City Hall, airport, and medical centers in both English and Spanish. Each poster included the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition phone number for rapid response assistance to those detained by ICE. PIRC provides community education, advocacy, and collaboration while recommending people avoid interfering with agents. Photojournalist John Rudoff contributed images from his ICE coverage, maintaining his work exists within journalism rather than activism.
