Tig Notaro on Cheryl Hines no longer talking to her: "Things shifted very severely" - Queerty
"I just felt like I needed to step away, because there are beliefs that were like a gnat on the arm years ago that were getting further into the spotlight. Cheryl wanted me to hear Bobby out. They had these good ideas, and I was like, 'I can't, I can't, I can't.' I just didn't trust it. And then he endorsed Trump, and then it just got hard."
"People would interrupt my stand-up shows and yell, 'Bobby is crazy!' I was telling Cheryl that I know it's a small percentage that pushes back online or yells out at shows, but I was like, 'Man, this is not my world. I don't do this, I don't want to be a part of this.' And she was like, 'I understand,' but she wanted to keep doing the podcast."
Tig Notaro and Cheryl Hines co-hosted the podcast Tig & Cheryl: True Story from 2020 to 2023 before their friendship ended. Notaro stepped away from the podcast in April 2023 when Hines' husband, Robert Kennedy Jr., announced his presidential campaign. Notaro explained that Kennedy's increasingly prominent views, which she had previously dismissed as minor concerns, became harder to ignore as they gained mainstream spotlight. She felt uncomfortable continuing the show and told Hines she couldn't support the direction. After Kennedy endorsed Trump, Notaro decided to exit completely. She noted that audience members would interrupt her stand-up shows criticizing Kennedy, making her uncomfortable with the association. Though Notaro loved Hines, she felt the situation was incompatible with her values and public image. Hines subsequently replaced Notaro with comedian Rachel Harris.
