"It was a ghost town,"
"Get rid of your madness in Madrid,"
"Always move slow with 'em,"
"Ah, shoot. Jumping parakeet."
Children attend a community radio camp at KMRD and interview local residents, including long-time resident Bill Hogrebe. Hogrebe and 54 others bought Madrid in the 1970s after the coal company abandoned the town. The town once housed nearly 3,000 people and now supports about 300 residents and an artists' community amid the Ortiz Mountains and old tailings piles. KMRD operates from a turquoise bungalow downtown and hosts more than 75 adult DJs each week. The station also involves youth through radio camp, connecting children with local history and community voices.
