"Once you're trying to get off heroin, what do you go to? You go to something else. I started smoking crack to get off heroin. It worked. It worked."
"I'm lucky that I've kept the brain I've got, because some people went brain-dead and some people ended up in jail forever. Or dead."
Billy Idol has been open about his severe drug addictions during the 1980s, which are documented in his new documentary titled Billy Idol Should Be Dead. In an appearance on Club Random With Bill Maher, Idol revealed an unconventional approach to overcoming heroin addiction: he switched to smoking crack cocaine, which he stated was effective. Idol has previously acknowledged his fortunate survival given the intensity of his substance abuse issues, noting that many others either suffered permanent brain damage, faced lengthy incarceration, or died. He attributes his survival partly to maintaining his cognitive abilities despite decades of heavy drug use.
