Steelers' Porter Jr. among 3 on defense out Sun.
"With Porter Jr. out, the Steelers will turn to offseason addition Brandin Echols and James Pierre to help fill in for the cornerback. "Absolutely, I believe so," defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said of Brandin Echols capability of playing outside corner in Porter Jr.'s absence. "I know when we first got him in the off season, we anticipated him playing a big role [before adding Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey]. He's still a really good player, and so I don't feel hamstrung about anything now that he has to step up and get into a more advanced role.""
"The Steelers will also be without safety DeShon Elliott (knee) and Derrick Harmon (knee). Elliott injured his knee against the Jets, while Harmon is recovering from an MCL sprain sustained in the final preseason game against the Panthers. Though they're missing three players, the Steelers defense does return one key piece in edge rusher Nick Herbig, who missed the season-opener with a hamstring injury. He's off the injury report for Sunday and is set to make his season debut."
Joey Porter Jr. experienced hamstring tightness against the Jets and did not practice all week, ruling him out Sunday. Brandin Echols and James Pierre will step in at cornerback to cover Porter Jr.'s absence. Echols was anticipated to play a significant role when acquired in the offseason and is considered capable of playing outside corner. Jalen Ramsey offers versatility and can shift positions as needed. Safeties DeShon Elliott and Derrick Harmon remain sidelined with knee injuries, including an MCL sprain for Harmon. Edge rusher Nick Herbig is cleared off the injury report and will make his season debut.
