"Hey, Sid, congratulations on passing me with 1,724 points. I knew when we played together in 2005 that you were going to be a very special player and accomplish a lot of great things in your career. Here we are 20 years later. You are now one of the best to ever play the game. You've been a great ambassador for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the National Hockey League, and the hockey world. I just would like to wish you all the best the rest of the way. And again, congratulations. Well done, my friend."
"It's kinda mixed emotions, I guess, because that number, I've been kinda hanging around, and the hockey gods made me earn it the last few games. Just to get the win in a shootout,"
Sidney Crosby became the Pittsburgh Penguins' all-time points leader with 1,724 points after recording a goal and an assist against the Montreal Canadiens. Crosby recorded both points within the first 12:40 of the first period. His goal at 7:58 was a deflection of an Erik Karlsson point shot past Jakub Dobes, tying the franchise record. Four minutes later Crosby assisted on a Rickard Rakell power-play tap-in to take sole possession of the mark at 1,724 (645g, 1,079a). The Penguins bench celebrated, Mario Lemieux offered congratulations in a video, and Crosby was named First Star while posing with the milestone puck as his parents watched. Crosby described the moment as mixed emotions and said he had to earn the milestone over recent games.
