Gene Lamont, returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates after a 25-year absence as manager, was called back to help the team in a coaching capacity. At 78, he steps in as a special consultant, primarily serving as the bench coach for new manager Don Kelly, who has no prior managing experience. The Pirates are struggling this season, and Lamont believes the team can perform better, emphasizing the need for improved gameplay. Kelly is thrilled to learn from Lamont, who has a wealth of experience from his prior coaching roles.
It's more just being with Donnie. Maybe there are some decisions during the game that he'll wonder about. Do I have all the answers? I have the answers, but they're not always right. I'll give Donnie my opinion and hopefully it'll help.
I think we're a much better team than we've played. I think the players know that. But you have to do it on the field. You've got to make pitches, and everybody knows we've got to hit a little better.
Just a phenomenal baseball guy. Taught me a lot as a player and looking forward to having him around, teaching the staff and helping get this thing turned around.
