"We're Just Here for the Bad Guys" by Photographer Brian Van Lau
A debut monograph chronicles a photographer’s relationship with an estranged father who was absent during childhood due to incarceration. After release, the father rebuilt his life in Vietnam and disappeared for nearly a decade. The photographer traveled to Vietnam after hearing of a sudden illness and learned the father had terminal cancer. During the final week together, they collaborated on a photographic project documenting the father’s unsuccessful recovery. The photographer returned to Hawai‘i seeking closure and was entrusted with dispersing his father’s ashes across O‘ahu. Working with grandparents, he used photography to reconstruct a fragmented family history and uncover previously unknown parts of his father’s life.
