British photographer Kate Friend embarked on a pilgrimage to capture places where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, inspired by the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to Lisbon. Raised in a post-religious context, she always viewed religion as exotic. This experience revealed a vibrant, alive faith community around her. Merging her insights from previous art projects, she began exploring the themes of optimism and belief inherent in pilgrimage, akin to the mindset required in her photography, culminating in her creative series titled "There Are Always Flowers for Those Who Want to See Them."
"It does feel like a sense of optimism and faith and hope that you're going to come back with something," Friend said. "You have to believe that there is a picture there. Otherwise you're not going to go."
Friend grew up in what she understood to be a post-religious age... witnessing faith in many forms... religion always seemed somewhat exotic, or like something that other people did.
