"To me, community is a small society of people who work together to help one another. It is not pay-walled, and it also means that everyone does their part and even trying to go above and beyond. With that said, I think that the word community has been distorted in modern vernacular by marketing people. To that end, we use it as a word that almost seems like it's brainless."
"Community for photographers is, therefore, a place where photographers: Can find gigs Collaborate and message one another Give each other feedback in meaningful and constructive ways that aren't meant to boost an algorithm Isn't dependant on the attention economy With that said, I've been using several communities for years. Back in 2022, I wrote an article about just that. But as time has gone on and I've pledged to be off of social media, my thoughts have changed."
Community is defined as a small society of people who work together to help one another, without paywalls and with members contributing beyond basic participation. Marketing language has distorted the term, making it feel hollow. Instagram functions as a messaging platform rather than a community, while Facebook has some community aspects and Reddit exemplifies community through free mutual help with minimal advertising. Local camera clubs are often pay-walled and selective, whereas churches operate as communities without mandatory donations. For photographers, true communities enable finding gigs, collaboration, meaningful feedback, and independence from the attention economy.
