Ronin Roc on Why He Sees Black Art as "More Than February"
"I had the idea while watching Black Panther with my son. I drew Chadwick Boseman while watching, and people were excited by the piece. So, I challenged myself to draw a different Black figure every day in February. I also saw an episode of Black-ish and heard this line: "We're more than just February." It stuck with me. Even if I drew a new figure every day of the year, I'm not gonna get even close to all of our civil rights leaders, let alone the other influential Black people. It's really hard to choose who I do next."
""We're more than just February.""
More Than February is an emerging art gallery located near Old Town/Chinatown dedicated to elevating Black creativity beyond a single month. Ronin Roc serves as chief curator and creates vibrant digital portraits of Black icons with global, national, and local significance. The gallery emphasizes accessibility and a sustained, shared platform to showcase Black artists in full dimension. The project began when Ronin drew Chadwick Boseman while watching Black Panther with his son and then challenged himself to draw a different Black figure each day in February. Ronin accepts commissions and selects subjects based on inspiration and community relevance.
