One Photographer and a Stylist's Joyful Portrait of Creative Freedom
"I grew up in Bolton, which didn't have the most vibrant fashion scene, so from a young age, I spent most of my free time in Manchester, usually in the Northern Quarter or on Oldham Street, where we are now. When I was younger, I never thought that I would develop a career in the creative industries, so it was eye-opening to come into a bigger city where people had slightly broader ideas of what is acceptable to wear."
"Places like Affleck's Palace were very formative environments. I worked in two small stores in Affleck's when I was a teenager, but even before this, it had a 'Mecca' vibe for my friends and me. We would go every weekend, make badges, make..."
Anna Victoria Best, a British photographer based in Copenhagen, and stylist Lara McGrath (@thegoatdancer) have created Keka Rocka through a three-year collaboration. McGrath is recognized for her distinctive styling approach, layering and reinterpreting inexpensive high street items, earning recognition from industry figures like Nick Knight and Purple magazine. The pair held an interactive event at Village Books in Manchester's basement gallery, featuring a life drawing class where McGrath modeled poses from the publication. Participants sketched directly into the book to create unique editions. McGrath grew up in Bolton and developed her fashion awareness through formative experiences in Manchester's Northern Quarter, particularly at Affleck's Palace, where she worked as a teenager and discovered broader perspectives on acceptable fashion expression.
