Visiting casinos in Vegas as a child created lasting impressions of the environment, especially observing a stark contrast between promotional glamour and reality. Visits reinforced a disinterest in gambling due to witnessing the consequences firsthand. Photography became a medium to explore this difference, capturing absurdities and contradictions present in casino culture across popular locations like Reno and Atlantic City. A cautious approach was maintained while photographing, avoiding gambling tables for fear of misinterpretation or embarrassment.
The photographs I'd been accumulating started to form a cohesive body of work, showing the contrast between the glamour in the marketing, and the actuality which is more like going to the airport than a big night out in Monte Carlo.
My dad only actually took us into a casino a couple of times, but I remember him believing he would win and my mother being more rational about it.
