As the conflict in Sudan enters its third year, the humanitarian crisis deepens. Mosab Abushama describes returning to his devastated home in Omdurman, where he found it looted and destroyed. Tens of thousands are reported dead, with millions displaced, including 4 million fleeing abroad. Abushama's family was internally displaced due to fighting between the army and paramilitary forces. He remained in Omdurman to support local hospitals and food kitchens, highlighting the personal recovery amidst widespread destruction and loss prevalent in his and many others' lives.
When we came back, everything had been stolen. There was nothing left - no furniture, no belongings, not even our clothes.
Abushama remained behind with his elderly father, who was unable to obtain a visa to leave, while his neighborhood became a battlefield.
Now in its third year of war, Sudan faces the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands dead and 13 million displaced.
Loss and nostalgia are central themes in Abushama's work, reflecting the personal toll of destruction and displacement on Sudanese families.
