Austin Bell Chronicles Every Single One of Hong Kong's 2,549 Basketball Courts
""To me, basketball courts are one of the most interesting subjects for aerial photography because they look so different from above than the ground. Their flatness and geometric design become an almost extraterrestrial tableau-like concrete cropcircles.""
""One of the newest ones is at a playground called Chung Sing, which is so named for the sound a bell makes, so the designers stylized the surrounding area with audio waveforms.""
""The insane became mundane. I had become an obsessive completist, unable to stop capturing these vibrant spaces that tell a story of community and recreation.""
Austin Bell's project, SHOOTING HOOPS, captures the vibrant outdoor basketball courts of Hong Kong, totaling 2,549. The courts, often devoid of people, present a ghostly yet colorful view of urban recreation spaces. Bell utilized drone photography and satellite imagery to explore these courts, taking over 40,000 photos during 140 days of shooting. His work highlights the geometric designs of the courts, which resemble extraterrestrial landscapes, and reflects the cultural significance of these spaces in densely populated neighborhoods.
