Spneb, a 37-year-old Humboldt penguin at Paradise Park in Cornwall, celebrated her birthday with a special cake made of her favorite fish, sprats. She is recognized globally as the oldest of her species, as Humboldt penguins typically live only 10 to 15 years. Spneb was born in 1988 and has been a resident of the zoo since shortly after her birth. Despite her age, she is described as having a good appetite and watches over the younger penguins in her colony.
Spneb continues to have a good appetite, although she's an elderly penguin. She is doing amazingly well for her age.
Records kept by zoos around the world suggest she is the oldest of her species across the globe and is amazing for her age.
Her unusual name was picked by keepers after she underwent treatment for a dangerous fungal disease called Aspergillosis in 2007.
The Humboldt penguin is native to the west coast of South America, specifically the Pacific coasts of Chile and Peru.
