San Francisco rabbit with over 55,000 followers dies suddenly
Briefly

Alex the Great, a 28-pound Flemish Giant rabbit and cherished local figure in San Francisco, has passed away at the age of 4. His owner, Kei Kato, shared news of his death due to significant health problems, including cancer. Alex gained popularity after accompanying Kato to a Giants game in 2021, where he was embraced as a 'therapy bunny.' He often participated in community events, including being a regular at local sports games and an honorary pitch thrower. Kato noted Alex's enduring legacy even after his passing.
"His legacy will go on forever and will continue his work," Kato's post on Monday shortly after Alex's death said. "Alex fought really hard between cancer and the anesthesia issue. He was doing fine yesterday and I think that he wanted to be strong enough so they would let us see him before he go."
Alex first entered the city's social consciousness in April 2021 after Kato and Row brought the rabbit to a San Francisco Giants game. Kato told a reporter that she adopted the rabbit after losing her restaurant during the pandemic.
The bunny continued to be a common presence at sporting events and parties across the Bay Area, including as a guest at Outside Lands. Alex even went up to Reno last month to "throw out" a ceremonial first pitch at a game for the Aces, a Triple-A team.
