A red fox was discovered aboard a cargo ship that arrived at the Port of New York & New Jersey from Southampton, England on February 19. The 11-pound male fox had spent approximately 14 days at sea among automobiles before being secured by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Zoo officials report the fox is in good condition and settling in well at the Bronx Zoo's Animal Health Center. Veterinarians are conducting routine health screenings while the fox receives a diet of produce and protein. Following the screening, the zoo will collaborate with wildlife experts to locate an appropriate permanent home for the 2-year-old animal.
