"PDSA, the vet charity for pets in need, has estimated that there are 11.1 million dogs in the UK and 10.5 million cats. More than half (51%) of the 5,387 pet owners surveyed for the PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) report say they are worried about being able to afford the cost of veterinary care for their pet. Such statistics illustrate that there is a market opportunity in pet care, which technology firms are looking to address."
"Pet health technology company AI for Pet is using advanced vision artificial intelligence (AI) to transform simple smartphone images and videos into real-time health insights. Ronnie Hyun, vice-president at AI for Pet, said: "We are using vision AI. People take a picture using a mobile phone and we then analyse the image." The application identifies clinical signals based on images of eyes, skin and teeth, as well as gait analysis."
11.1 million dogs and 10.5 million cats live in the UK, and 51% of surveyed pet owners worry about affording veterinary care. That cost pressure creates a market opportunity for pet-care technology leveraging advances from human healthcare. Purina's Unleashed Network showcased startups at the London Vet Show, including AI for Pet, Sylvester.ai and VEA. AI for Pet applies vision AI to smartphone images and videos to detect clinical signals from eyes, skin, teeth and gait, producing differential diagnostic information and personalised recommendations for veterinary clinics. Sylvester.ai's model reads facial cues of domestic short-haired cats to assess pain, anxiety or distress, with a web app launched in July.
