"When Magawa retired in 2021, he helped younger rats develop detection skills, demonstrating that rats can learn by observing each other. His contributions significantly impacted land mine clearance efforts in Cambodia."
Magawa, an African giant pouched rat, was recognized for his bravery in detecting over 100 land mines in Cambodia. A seven-foot statue was unveiled to honor him. Trained by Apopo, Magawa's keen sense of smell and light weight allowed him to safely locate explosives without triggering them. Over five years, he cleared approximately 1.5 million square feet of land. After retiring, he assisted in training younger rats. His efforts contributed to saving lives in a country still affected by land mines from past conflicts.
