New England-based rescue takes in batch of neglected axolotls
"Several of them went straight to our vet for veterinary care. The rest were dispersed among our experienced fosters for different levels of rehabilitation."
"We have very good rates when it comes to rehabilitation and placement. We're trying to prevent some of these situations that we see on a regular basis that would honestly not happen if people had."
Libertyland Axolotl Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to axolotls, is seeking donations to rehabilitate 16 axolotls suffering from missing limbs and bacterial infections. These axolotls were surrendered due to overcrowding. The organization has already placed some in veterinary care and others with experienced foster parents. The axolotls, named after cheese, are recovering well and demonstrating their ability to regenerate limbs. Founded in July 2024, the rescue focuses on education, rehabilitation, and adoption, having successfully rehomed over 100 adult axolotls in 2025.
