Joan Morris: Ducks thrive in Sunnyvale pool; their welcome is wearing thin
Briefly

Nancy in Sunnyvale has been hosting a family of seven ducklings and a mother mallard in her pool for six weeks. Concerned for their future, she inquired about relocating them. Due to federal protections under the Migratory Birds Act, these ducks cannot be physically removed or rehomed. Instead, for their safety and well-being, recommendations include making her yard less appealing, starting with ceasing to feed them. Providing four essential elements (water, food, shelter) inadvertently encourages the family to stay in her space.
Over the years I have watched mother ducks in the neighborhood walking down the street with their ducklings as crows followed and pecked at the last duckling.
These birds are protected under the federal Migratory Birds Act, which means you can't physically relocate, harm or harass them… But because they are wild birds, not domesticated, they can't be rehomed.
