From pulling tourist carriages to peaceful pastures: Malaga's horses start a new life
"Born in 1999, he has been taking thousands of tourists on carriage rides through the Spanish city of Malaga since 2007. He pulled one of the 25 horse-drawn carriages licensed to operate in the Andalusian capital. Since the city announced the revocation of those permits just a few weeks ago, the future of Guitarra and the other horses had been uncertain: some were to continue working in other cities, while others were destined for the slaughterhouse."
"Although these were due to expire in 2035, municipal authorities wanted to end the activity early to remove the carriages from the streets. We are taking this step in the interest of animal welfare and the image the city projects to the world, said Francisco de la Torre, the mayor of Malaga, from the conservative Popular Party (PP). In compensation for the termination of the service, each owner received about 125,000 ($145,000) per license."
Guitarra is a 26-year-old carriage horse that worked in Malaga taking tourists on rides since 2007. Malaga city officials canceled the city's 25 horse‑drawn carriage licenses early, citing animal welfare and concerns about the city's image. Owners received about €125,000 ($145,000) compensation per license. After the revocation, some horses faced transfer to other cities or slaughter, but three associations and many individuals secured 16 horses for rescue. Sixteen horses, including Guitarra, Beyonce, Piropo, Eduardo, Apache, Tana and Jaleo, now rest at A Better Life 4 Horses near Cartaojal, Antequera, run by Danish-born Signe Froslee. Some horses are retired; others require rehabilitation for trauma.
