
"Admirers of canine beauty will have their inning on February 19, 20, 21 and 22 when the Westminster Kennel club gives its twentieth annual dog show at Madison Square Garden. The exhibition bids fair to outdo all previous events of the kind in point of number, variety and quality. There are 246 classes as against 238 for last year and nearly every known breed of dog is provided for. The premiums in the regular classes foot up a sum of over $8,000, which, with the special prizes offered by the Mastiff, St. Bernard, Bloodhound, Great Dane, Pointer, Irish Setter, Gordon Setter, American Spaniel, Collie, Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, Beagle, Fox Terrier, Bedlington Terrier and Scottish Terrier clubs is increased to over $12,000."
"Among the most valuable specials are: The Westminster challenge cup, for the best mastiff under 3 years of age, value $300; the silver challenge cup, value $150, for the best American bred mastiff owned by a member of the American Mastiff club; the Taunton gold medal, value $50, for the best American bred mastiff under 2 years of age; the club's silver challenge cup, value $100, for the best mastiff dog and the club's silver challenge cup, value $100, for the best mastiff bitch owned by a member of the club. The old English Mastiff club of England, not to be outdone in generosity, offers its challenge cup, value 40 guineas, for the best mastiff dog or bitch, the property of a member, also the challenge cup, value 20 guineas, for the best mastiff opposite in sex to the one winning the 40 guinea cup."

In February 1896 the Westminster Kennel Club staged its twentieth annual dog show at Madison Square Garden with 246 classes, an increase from 238 the prior year. Nearly every known breed was represented and regular-class premiums totaled over $8,000. Special prizes from numerous breed clubs raised total awards to more than $12,000. Multiple valuable specials and challenge cups were offered by American and English Mastiff clubs and other breed organizations. In 1902 Congress pursued a coordinated funding campaign to begin major irrigation projects intended to reclaim arid lands in the American West.
