Dozens of peacocks and peahens at a historic hotel in Walnut Grove, California, are missing, with staff believing they were stolen. A hotel guest witnessed two men capturing one bird. After a count, only four birds remained. The male peacocks are valued at $2,000 each and peahens at $1,000. The peacocks, bought 14 years ago, have become a signature of the hotel. Staff treated them as pets, feeding them gourmet leftovers and naming them. One peacock, Baba, displayed a particularly commanding presence.
"We're not sure why anyone would do anything like this, but the staff is absolutely heartbroken," Nielsen said.
"The male birds are valued at $2,000 each and the peahens at $1,000 each," said Sgt. Amar Gandhi.
"They reproduced 'to the point that they became a signature of the hotel,' Nielsen said."
"I joked with the owner that we worked for Baba because he would walk through the dinner rooms, the ballrooms and the garden with this attitude that he was the boss," Goorwitch said.
