Lee Cox, who guided Clumber spaniel Bruin to victory at Crufts 2026 in Birmingham, was previously convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog. In September 2001, Cox was found guilty following a three-day trial at Sedgemoor Magistrates Court after a black cocker spaniel named Adam suffered a chronic ear infection requiring amputation. He received a three-year conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £5,000 in costs. A Royal Kennel Club spokesperson acknowledged the conviction but characterized it as an isolated incident from 25 years prior, noting Cox maintained an unblemished record throughout the subsequent two and a half decades.
