Bronx Zoo caring for stowaway fox found aboard ship from England
"First and foremost we're just focused on the animal's health. All things considered, it's doing pretty well, it's nice and strong, it doesn't seem terribly afraid of people, it's not that skittish, so the animal is doing well."
"The Bronx Zoo regularly works with officials to help rescue wildlife that is illegally trafficked through nearby ports and airports, however, they say it is rare to rescue a stowaway. Officials with the zoo say red foxes are very adaptable and thrive in various environments."
A 2-year-old male red fox weighing approximately 11 pounds was discovered hidden in cargo aboard a ship traveling from England to the Port of New York and New Jersey. United States Customs and Border Protection safely secured the animal and transferred it to the Bronx Zoo on February 19. Initial veterinary examinations indicate the fox is in good health, displaying strength and minimal fear of people. The zoo is conducting routine screenings before determining permanent placement. The Bronx Zoo regularly assists with wildlife rescue operations at nearby ports and airports, though stowaways are uncommon. Red foxes are highly adaptable animals capable of thriving in diverse environments.
