"WILLIAMSBURG - RENTED GROUNDHOG "Wolfgang" drew a crowd to McCarren Park on Feb. 1, with organizer Riley Callanan telling the New York Post she paid $2,250 for the animal and invited Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, who teased he may return in 2027 as a human "groundhog" in a look-alike contest, the New York Post reports."
""Next year, I'm going to come and I'm going to audition with many of you and become a human [groundhog] next year to determine the shadow," Sliwa declared."
""You're glazing me!" Sliwa told the crowd, while NYCLASS and Humane Long Island protested what they called a stressful winter spectacle for a hibernating animal. "Groundhogs naturally hibernate in the winter, and forcing one into a stressful, unnatural environment ... is cruel and dangerous," NYCLASS said."
A rented groundhog named Wolfgang drew a crowd to McCarren Park on Feb. 1. Organizer Riley Callanan paid $2,250 for the animal and invited Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. Sliwa teased that he may return in 2027 as a human groundhog and said he would audition to determine the shadow. The gathering kicked off a bar crawl and included Sliwa addressing the crowd. Animal advocates from NYCLASS and Humane Long Island protested the spectacle, arguing that groundhogs naturally hibernate in winter and that exposing a hibernating animal to a stressful, unnatural environment is cruel and dangerous.
