A new report by veterinary telemedicine company Dutch reveals that approximately 38% of Americans may reside in veterinary care deserts, lacking accessible and affordable veterinary services. The report indicates that 22% of U.S. counties have no veterinarians per 1,000 households, particularly affecting regions in California, Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas. Joe Spector, the CEO of Dutch, highlights the shortage of veterinary schools and increasing veterinary burnout as contributing factors. Dutch, launched in 2021, provides a telehealth platform connecting pet owners to licensed veterinarians for various conditions online, offering affordable consultation options.
Pet owners know finding a good veterinarian is hard. But in much of the country, finding a vet at all is increasingly tough.
There are around 34 veterinary schools in the United States, while there's almost 400 medical schools.
We just don't produce that many veterinarians and the veterinarians we do produce drop out [from burnout].
These are the folks who otherwise would not see a veterinarian otherwise, because we've made it far more affordable.
