France jails ex-Lido feather artist for rape, assault of minors
"The first victim, now 33, said he had dreamt of becoming a dancer when he met de Roo aged 14. He had hoped the artist would guide him after growing up with a depressive mother and absent father. Instead the artist groomed him, the investigation showed."
"He 'exerted his control through every act, every rape,' Baptiste said. 'And once he had that hold over me, there was a lot of emotional blackmail.'"
"The second plaintiff said de Roo touched him inappropriately when he visited the feather workshop where he was an apprentice as a teenager."
"A third person on the stand on Tuesday accused him of non-consensual sexual acts when he was aged 14 to 18, but has to date filed no legal complaint."
Jean-Claude de Roo, a 77-year-old former costume maker, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing two minors. He was found guilty of raping a boy under 15 from 2007 to 2010 and assaulting another teenager in 2016. De Roo initially denied the charges but later expressed regret. The first victim described being groomed and controlled by de Roo, while the second victim reported inappropriate touching during an apprenticeship. A third individual accused de Roo of non-consensual acts but has not filed a complaint.
