Mellody Hobson shared parenting wisdom she received from George Lucas after the birth of their daughter Everest, now 12. Lucas described how having a child eliminates the “highway” that exists in adult life where it can be “my way or the highway.” He explained that adults can demand compliance from others, including spouses, but that a child creates a different learning environment. Hobson said Everest holds her accountable by noticing when her attention drifts during conversations. Hobson also described Everest as guarded and observant, taking in information without being openly chatty with new people, and becoming discerning through careful observation.
"“George told me this when we had Everest. He said, 'Mellody, with a child, there is no highway,'” Hobson recalled. "He said, 'You live in a world where it's my way or the highway. You can put anyone on the highway, including a spouse. You have people who work for you.' He's like, 'It's my way or the highway, but there's no highway with a child.' He's like, 'And that is going to be your learning,'” she added."
"“I have a child that holds me accountable,” Hobson told Craig Melvin on the May 19 episode of his “Glass Half Full” podcast. Citing an example of how Everest holds her accountable, Hobson said, “When I'm talking to her, she's like, 'You've stopped paying attention to me.'” “She's 12, so she can see when my mind leaves the conversation,” Hobson added."
"“I'm friendly to everyone. And she's reserved, very. ... And, so, she's discerning, and I really appreciate that about her,” she added. She called their daughter “formidable,” noting she is a guarded child. “She's an observer. She will take in a lot of information. She's not chatty with others. She's very, very reticent when she meets people. She doesn't just let you in,” Hobson said."
"“I married Yoda's dad, you know that. He's very wise, he is,” she said. “There are a lot of great learnings that come from George. And at the same time - he knows that I say this - he's your crazy uncle. He's both. He's a genius who's a crazy uncle, too.”"
