Ksenia Samotiy: We need to talk about the expectations placed on women by other women when it comes to parenting
"Questions that a man never gets asked: How on earth did you manage to go on a trip by yourself? Where is your child? How did you persuade your partner to look after them? When a mother of youngish children dares to post a photo from a short trip abroad, however, the questions are not about the place, the food or streets she is exploring."
Mothers and fathers face starkly different social scrutiny when taking time away from their children. Men traveling alone rarely encounter questions about their children's whereabouts or childcare arrangements, while mothers face immediate interrogation about how they managed to leave their children and who is caring for them. This disparity reveals internalized assumptions about parenting responsibilities that disproportionately burden mothers. These gendered expectations persist despite evolving family structures and shared parenting models. Examining these assumptions is essential for creating more equitable standards around parental autonomy and personal time for both mothers and fathers.
