Jeffrey Katzenberg says legislation to protect children from online harms is unlikely: 'It took 80 years' to pass seatbelt laws
""The idea that we'll see aggressive legislation [to combat online harms] in this country soon is unlikely," he said."
""These things don't happen quickly, unfortunately.""
""Most kids actually want guidance, they want help along the way, [though] they don't want to be spied on," he explained."
""Aura is observational-it's giving you as a parent around data and information...mostly this is about what does their digital health look like.""
Jeffrey Katzenberg invested in Aura in 2021 motivated by his role as a parent and grandparent. Aura builds AI-driven tools that track behavioral patterns such as sleep and focus, flag mental-health risks including self-harm or suicidal ideation, and provide parents visibility into social media, gaming, and AI chat activity. The platform analyzes language, tone, emotional expression and late-night activity and was developed with pediatric and mental-health experts, including collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital. Survey data cited shows rising teen depression and social withdrawal. Katzenberg argues parents cannot wait for slow legislative solutions and need observational tools for digital health.
