As a restaurant reviewer and solo parent, I sought to introduce my daughter, Via, to the world of dining out. Initially challenged by her behavior in restaurants, I began practicing at home with creative eating experiences, like 'smorgasbord nights,' where she chose which dishes to continue making. This empowered her to explore new flavors and understand the dining process. By combining play and education, I aimed to transform traditional parenting advice on dining with kids into a fun and enriching experience, making eating out more enjoyable for both of us.
Standard parenting advice on eating out with kids focuses more on 'surviving' the meal than enjoying the process, but I wondered if there was a different way.
I started at home, initiating 'smorgasbord nights,' where we would make several new dishes, and my daughter was in charge of tasting each and determining which ones we should make again.
I began writing about food almost a decade ago, and as a restaurant reviewer, I frequently get to eat at incredible restaurants.
To help my naturally curious daughter understand restaurants, I started to explain to her what was happening around us when we went out to eat.
