"Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are among the most common complications associated with pregnancy and postpartum. These include postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and psychosis."
Preparing for a new baby often centers on the newborn’s needs, while the question of who will care for the mother receives less attention. The postpartum period, sometimes called the fourth trimester, involves physical recovery alongside interrupted sleep, hormonal changes, identity shifts, and constant demands of caring for a dependent newborn. Many women enter postpartum with little preparation for the emotional side of these changes. Expectations of immediate happiness and bonding may not match lived experience. Exhaustion, overwhelm, anxiety, irritability, loneliness, grief, emotional numbness, and intrusive thoughts can occur, and bonding may take different amounts of time. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are common complications and include postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and psychosis.
