Getting Closer to Stepchildren Through Working Together
Stepparents can strengthen relationships by building positive connections with stepchildren early and continuing those efforts. Bonding can happen through shared fun, but working together is also effective. “Working” means joining forces to address a problem or complete a project, such as helping with school assignments, supporting 4-H club work, changing a car’s oil, or refinishing a desk. Connection through work depends on choosing tasks the stepchild cares about and ensuring cooperative effort between stepparent and stepchild. Shared projects also create opportunities to model behaviors and mentor stepchildren while working toward a common goal.
