Apparently, Teens "Sh*t The Nest" Before They Leave Home
Watching graduations can intensify feelings about children leaving home. A parent with three daughters worries about the transition as the oldest nears 12. The term “shitting the nest” is used to describe teenagers pushing boundaries and treating parents as if they are clueless. A theory suggests this behavior helps ensure parents do not miss their children too much by creating a period of relief as the child becomes more independent. During teen years, parents may struggle to remember the behavior is developmentally normal. One parent described feeling devastated by a 15-year-old’s lack of interest in spending time together and questioned whether they were pathetic. Others responded that the stage is normal and that teenagers may be little jerks for a few years to make separation easier.
"One commenter wrote, "Not to sound flippant, but I've heard this stage referred to as 'shitting the nest.' It'd be unbearable to lose them if they were their sweet selves, so they make it easier on us by being little jerks for a few years""
